Daniel joined the Fabulous Group last week and is the newest member of Fabulous Financial.

Tell us a bit about your background in Finance

I have just over 10 years’ experience in finance. Having completed sixth form, I decided to go to college and study AAT. A year into studying, I got my first finance role at a small accountancy practise based in Market Harborough producing VAT bookkeeping for clients. I became AAT qualified in 2013.

Wanting to gain experience of working in industry, I joined a major holiday home company for a couple of years where I worked alongside the Financial Controller with responsibility for sales and purchase ledgers.

Most recently, prior to joining The Fabulous Group, I was working for a Northamptonshire based accountancy firm producing VAT returns and payroll for a number of small and large clients. During this time, I gained knowledge in various accountancy software such as Xero, SAGE and SAGE Payroll. During this time, I also gained FMAAT status with the AAT.

What does your current role entail?

My role as finance assistant involves performing updates on sales & purchase ledgers, producing weekly journal entries for cash expenses, reconciling ledgers on bank transactions and reconciling accounts alongside other ad-hoc work for clients.

Since I am only one week into the role, it is really nice knowing how friendly the team are and that there is always help available if an issue occurs. The variety of work makes the role challenging and rewarding.

What software could you not work without and why?

Xero. I definitely could not live without it. I have been using Xero software for six years and it by far one of the best accounting packages out there.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in Finance what would it be?

AAT is a great place to start in Finance, you get to understand the basics which are the fundamentals in accounting and once you progress this can lead to bigger and better things.

Vandana joined the Fabulous Group just less than one year ago having relocated to the UK from India.

Tell us a bit about your background in Finance

My background has always been in Finance. Whilst I was living in India, I completed a master’s degree in commerce. In 2005 I moved to the UK and landed a job at Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury in their accounts department where I worked as an Accounts Assistant. It is here that I gained my knowledge in banking, auditing, accounts receivable, accounts payable and commissions.

After 8 years in this role I returned to India for 6 years where I joined the family business, a furniture company, in a customer facing role with additional responsibility for doing the accounts payable and accounts receivable.

What does your current role entail?

Upon returning to the UK last year, I joined the Fabulous Group shortly afterwards. Up until this point I had always worked in Industry, but I was willing to try something new hence I accepted this role.  I started as a bookkeeper learning how to do the Management Accounts and I now support the finance team with month-end which is an integral part of my role. Having always worked in finance I have adapted to the differences from Industry well and enjoy what I do.

What software could you not work without and why?

I like Xero because it is very straightforward and easy to pick up. Their training is very good too.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in Finance what would it be?

Choosing a career in Finance is a good decision. It is exciting and challenging and there are always opportunities for growth. Above all it is a stable career choice.

Maxine joined the Fabulous Group shortly before lockdown, having chosen a career change to Finance.

Tell us a bit about your background in Finance

Surprisingly I have no background in finance at all. For the last 14 years I have worked for the NHS in various roles from paediatric clinic co-ordinator to patient flow manager.

Within those roles I managed different services and teams and worked in extremely high-pressure situations dealing with many challenging scenarios. Since starting my own family, my priorities changed, I could no longer work shift patterns and following my son’s health scare, working within paediatrics was all a bit too close to home.

Over Christmas last year I decided I was going to do something different and retrain in Finance. Lots of people asked why I would like to be an accountant, and although there is no definitive answer, I like problem solving and have always been good at maths and therefore accountancy seemed an appropriate path to explore. I started by signing up to complete my AAT, which I am currently doing and so far, I have passed 3 exams at level 2, in the hopes of starting ACA afterwards.

What does your current role entail?

My transition into Finance wasn’t how I had envisaged it to be. A couple of weeks into joining the Fabulous Group we entered lockdown and I found myself working from home whilst trying to juggle childcare and studying. Now that I am back working in the office, I am extremely happy and thoroughly enjoying getting my teeth stuck into learning. My learning has been steered towards year end accounts, personal tax returns and corporate tax returns.

What software could you not work without and why?

I simply could not work without Xero. Xero is so easy to learn, and their online training is amazing, it’s great how many different things you can use it for.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in Finance what would it be?

As someone starting over, even if you believe you are following the career path you want to, you can always change at any point. I kept saying to myself that I am not getting any younger so why not! Although this year has not been smooth sailing, it has been interesting to say the least. There are several parts of my previous career that I miss, especially managing a team, however I am glad I took a chance in myself and I am really enjoying knowing that I can still learn new things.
